I have a legal copy of SC/SCBW. I want to be able to run it off my iPod (which is enabled for disk use, so it functions as a 120GB flash drive) while at school -- preferably without the CD and with the latest patch. CD-less campaign access and downgradability are optional, but would be very nice. Legality is a must -- I'd prefer to do this without piracy, if that's at all possible. Anyone know where I can get the tools to legally set this up, or how to legally create such a setup myself? 1) Install SC on a computer 2) Copy the SC directory to your iPod 3) Run it off your iPod. Obviously only the newer version will work, since they have the no CD patch.
If you want older versions, you can use SCLoader2b (or chaos launcher?). I use to do this too (with my 64 GB iPod video). Patch 1.15.2 --------------------- Feature Changes - StarCraft and StarCraft: BroodWar no longer require the CD while playing the game. To play without the CD, please follow the following instructions: Windows Users: - Make sure you have 'Hide extensions for known types' unchecked. To do this please use the following steps: - Click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer - Click on Tools -> Folder options (Windows Vista users may have to press the Alt key to see the tools option at the top of the window) - Click on the View Tab In the list, look for the 'Hide extensions for known file types' option, and make sure that it is unchecked.
StarCraft: Brood War continues the award-winning saga of galactic warfare as the Zerg, Protoss and Terrans struggle for their continued survival. With the shattered Zerg hive torn apart by fierce.
- Click OK to save the changes. - Now you will need to copy some files from the Game CDs - If you own only StarCraft, copy 'INSTALL.EXE' from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to 'StarCraft.mpq'. - If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy 'INSTALL.EXE' from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder and rename it to 'BroodWar.mpq'. If you wish to play the StarCraft original missions then please copy and rename the install file from the original StarCraft CD as well, as listed directly above. If you do it for both StarCraft and BroodWar then you can play both campaigns. If you do it for only one, you can still play this campaign. Arkadij severnij programma dlya goskoncerta.
StarCraft does not need to be registered/installed to run. But you have to copy a folder where it's been installed to. Doing that now. Thanks for the help. One question: how well does this run? (In terms of startup time, etc.) Does SC frequently read/write to the disk it's installed on?
If it reads/writes often, is there a way to minimize the frequency of these operations to avoid potentially shortening my iPod's lifespan? It should run fine. Doshkoljnie propisi v kletku. SC's main limiter is ram, and 512mb ram is more than enough.
The loading screen at start up is slightly longer (maybe 1-2 seconds). As for your iPod's lifespan. (Trying to remember what I read.) If a 4gb USB 2.0 is booted off of, and used as the main HD of a computer, it will last about 3 months, if used 8 hours a day, every day - so like 720 hours of use. Playing sc shouldn't have a noticeable effect on your iPod life (unless you plan on playing SC off it 2 hours a day every day for the next 4 years). [07:56 pm] -- I get scared seeing you have been experiencing this issue, as I am currently using CUnitData triggers in my current project. Occasionally I make a mistake and break the map, but I usually am able to fix it by restoring the previous version and rebuilding from there. Not the most fun thing to do, but in my case, I'm mostly editing triggers, so I just copy and paste the triggers from trigedit of the current version into the previous version and skip ahead a version past the current version and save again.
This has kept my project alive thusfar.
#1 This is a cracked version(v1.15.2) of Starcraft used mainly for playing with at LANs where every computer does not have Starcraft installed. Great for allowing multiple people to play together at school, work, etc. There is no installation or patching or anything. Easiest if you put it in a jump drive and pass it around so people can get the file, but I've often forgotten the jump drive at home so alternatively every person can just download it from the link provided below. Now some of you may think that this shouldn't be allowed to be posted on TL(if a mod still thinks otherwise let me know of course), but I believe it is fine because you cannot play on B.net with this, due to the fact that you aren't using a valid CD-key. Just like legit Starcraft, you can put in a banned CD-key or whatever and still play, but just not go online, so in my opinion this is just an easier way that skips the installation process but still provides the same thing without installing with an actual CD.
