I have a friend who is starting out with FFXIV and was interested in how I had my HUD set up when they were watching me run things. I gave them some very general advice and to experiment, but they told me that all the options were a bit too much without something to copy as a base to tweak to their own liking. I have the fairly typical three bar job abilities block with the number row being the main keys with Ctrl for the second and Shift for the third. Job bars are typically in the same spot under the Target Bar, some on the left side, some on the right under Focus Target. Bars 4 and 5 have situational items on the left with convenience stuff on the right.

The setup works very well for me since my eyes are mostly in the center of my screen or at my enemy list. I generally look at my ability icons and since my map is there it also helps me see if there's anything I need to see.
